A presença do conceito de sublime nas reflexões de alguns dos principais autores da filosofia da arte do século XX é, em muitos casos, saudada como o ressurgimento de um conceito estético relegado ao segundo plano após as formulações de Kant e Schiller, ainda no século XVIII. O impacto da estética hegeliana e de seu veredicto sobre o fim da (bela) arte, tal como as aspirações metafísicas de Schelling e Schopenhauer nos dão a impressão de que o século XIX ignorou o sublime, cabendo aos autores do século seguinte, como Adorno e Lyotard, a tarefa de retomar uma história interrompida deste conceito. Neste artigo, contudo, defenderemos a tese de que há, na obra do poeta e filósofo Friedrich Hölderlin, um elo de ligação entre as definições do sublime na estética kantiana e seu apenas aparente renascimento na contemporaneidade.

The presence of the concept of the sublime in the reflections of some of the main authors of 20th century philosophy of art is often hailed as the resurgence of an aesthetic concept relegated to smaller role after its formulations in Kant’s and Schiller’s works in the 18th century. The impact of Hegelian aesthetics and its verdict on the end of (fine) art, as well as the metaphysical aspirations of Schelling and Schopenhauer, give us the impression that the 19th century ignored the sublime, leaving it to the authors of the following century, such as Adorno and Lyotard, the task of resuming the interrupted history of this concept. In this article, however, we will defend the thesis that there is, in the work of the poet and philosopher Friedrich Hölderlin, a link between the definitions of the sublime in Kantian aesthetics and its only apparent revival in contemporary times.
