Na leitura feita por Verlaine Freitas do romance o remorso de baltazar serapião, de valter hugo mãe, os personagens são designados como pré-trágicos. Para ele, a tragédia seria a etapa de passagem (ali faltosa) da barbárie à civilização. Sugiro neste artigo que, tomando por base essa leitura, o problema em jogo no romance de hugo mãe é menos a oposição entre barbárie e civilização do que o nó que enlaça cada uma das diferentes cordas aí tensionadas: a cultura e a natureza.

In his reading of the novel o remorso de baltazar serapião, by valter hugo mãe, Verlaine Freitas designates the characters in the book as “pre-tragic”. For him, tragedy would be the stage passage (absent in the story) from barbarism to civilization. I suggest in this article, based on Verlaine’s reading, that the issue at stake in the novel is not so much the opposition between barbarism and civilization than it is the node that connects each of these two different strings there tensioned: nature and culture.
