O artigo tem por objeto Guerra aérea e literatura, último livro de crítica literária publicado por W. G. Sebald, no qual ele avalia a presença escassa e problemática, na literatura alemã do pós-guerra, do tema da destruição das cidades alemãs pelos bombardeios aliados nos anos finais da II Guerra. A questão colocada por Sebald – qual a forma literária adequada para apresentar a destruição provocada pela guerra? – é, em primeiro lugar, situada diante do diagnóstico da crise da experiência elaborado por Walter Benjamin a partir dos relatos do campo de batalha feitos por soldados da I Guerra. Discute-se então a posição ocupada no argumento de Sebald pelo livro de Alexander Kluge, O ataque aéreo a Halberstadt em 8 de abril de 1945, e por fim, a posição oscilante de Sebald a respeito da possibilidade de um aprendizado histórico e, consequentemente, de uma concepção de experiência com base numa literatura que enfrente a tarefa de rememorar o passado.

The subject of this article is Air Raid and Literature, the last book of literary criticism published by W.G. Sebald, in which he evaluates the scarce and problematic presence in post-war German literature of the theme of the destruction of German cities by Allied bombing raids in the final years of World War II. The question posed by Sebald - what is the appropriate literary form to present the destruction caused by the war? - is, firstly, situated in the light of Walter Benjamin's diagnosis of the crisis of experience based on the battlefield accounts of soldiers from the First World War. It then discusses the position occupied in Sebald's argument by Alexander Kluge's book, The Air Raid on Halberstadt on 8 April 1945, and finally Sebald's oscillating position on the possibility of historical learning and, consequently, of a conception of experience based on a literature that tackles the task of remembering the past.
